Wondering how much money the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) could provide toward your tuition? This estimator gives you a quick, personalized estimate in just a few steps.

What to Know Before you Start:

  • The TAP Award Estimator provides an estimate ONLY of the New York State Tuition Assistance Program award you may receive
  • Estimates are based on full-time undergraduate enrollment only
  • For advice on financial aid specific to you, please consult with your college's Financial Aid office.

How to Use the TAP Estimator
  • Choose your academic year: Pick the year you plan to attend college.
  • Select your financial status: Choose either "Dependent" or "Independent"
  • Click Next: We will walk you through the estimator based on your answers.

Dependent vs. Independent?

Your dependency status determines whether you are required to submit your parent information when applying for New York State financial aid.

To be considered financially independent, you need to meet all three conditions below. These apply during the calendar year before the semester, quarter, or term you're applying for, and continue through the entire period in which your application is for.

  • You have not or will not live with your parents for more than six weeks.
  • You have not or will not receive more than $750 in financial assistance or support from your parents.
  • Neither parent has claimed you as a dependent on their federal or state income taxes.

For more information, review the TAP Student Status.

Important: Your TAP estimate is based on the current TAP formula under New York State law. It is a helpful tool to provide an estimate of your individual award, but cannot predict your exact award. Do not rely on the Estimator in making your individual financial decisions. HESC determines your actual award after verifying the details on your application. The formula is set by law and is subject to change.
