NYS Nursing Faculty Loan Forgiveness (NFLF) Incentive Program

Nursing faculty in New York State can apply for student loan forgiveness.

  • Registered nurse licensed to practice in NYS

  • Qualified as nursing faculty or adjunct clinical faculty

  • Be employed at a nursing school located in New York.

  • NYS resident for 12 continuous months prior to application

  • Outstanding balance on eligible student loan debt

The NYS Nursing Faculty Loan Forgiveness Incentive Program will open November 2024

Amount

$8,000

  • The maximum lifetime award under this Program is $40,000, paid in the amount of $8,000 for each annual period of qualified service completed, or the applicant's actual eligible student loan indebtedness at the time eligibility is established, whichever is less. 
  • Any additional payments made to reduce the outstanding balance may cause a reduction in the total amount of the award.

Depending on years of qualified service.

Any loan forgiveness award payments received may have tax implications. A 1099 form will be issued by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller reflecting the total loan forgiveness payment assistance received by the recipient for the year. Any questions regarding potential tax implications should be directed to a tax professional, the Internal Revenue Service, or the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.

Undocumented and other immigrant students: before submitting your application material, apply for eligibility under the NYS DREAM Act.

 

You can receive NFLF if you meet the following residency requirements: 

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, AND:
  • You must be a legal resident of New York State who has resided in New York State for 12 continuous months.

Eligible Student Loans

A successful applicant must have an outstanding balance on eligible student loan debt, used to fund a nursing degree, disbursed on or after January 1, 2001.

Eligible student loans include NYS or federal government loans, as well as private student loans made by commercial entities subject to governmental examination. This does not, however, include Parent PLUS loans and Perkins Loans.

Ineligible loans also include non-educational student loan consolidations and home equity loans used to pay off student loans.

Ineligible loans also includes private loans given for example by family or friends, or student loan debts paid via credit card.

  • Registered nurse professionally licensed to practice in NYS.
  • Possess a master’s degree in nursing or a doctoral degree for qualification as nursing faculty or as adjunct clinical faculty.
  • Have been employed as a nursing faculty member or as adjunct clinical faculty providing classroom or clinical instruction at a nursing school located in NYS for the equivalent of at least 12 credit hours during an annual period commencing July 1 and ending June 30.

There is no income requirement or limit.

Financial Status

To receive the loan forgiveness, you must:

  • Be in good standing (a non-default status) on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or on the repayment of any NYS award, AND:
  • Be in compliance with the terms of the service condition(s) imposed by any NYS award that you have previously received.
