TAP 2024 - 25 Purge Records
The 2024-25 TAP application purge occurred on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. TAP applications were purged for the following reasons:
- Student started filing an application, or multiple applications, that were saved but never fully submitted.
- Student submitted an application, or multiple applications, with identifying information (Name, DOB, SSN) that did not match their identifying information on FAFSA.
- Student submitted an application but did not have a fully processed 2024-25 FAFSA on the HESC system.
Email to Students
Students with unprocessed applications received a notice explaining the cancellation and steps to reapply. It is important to note that the purge process is annual. However, since students were able to submit a TAP application prior to filing the FAFSA for 2024-25, we received a higher number of applications that did not meet our processing standards.
Dear STUDENT,
Please be advised that you have an unprocessed New York State Student Aid Payment Application that has been cancelled. You may be receiving this notice because you submitted one or more applications that we determined to be invalid or we never received your FAFSA application, which is required to successfully process your application.
If you have submitted an application that was processed successfully, we are not cancelling that application and you may disregard this notice. Only duplicate or invalid applications you submitted were cancelled. To confirm if you submitted a successfully processed application, please log into your HESC account at https://www.hesc.ny.gov/my-hesc-account-access.
If your account status indicates that you do not have a processed application, you will need to complete a new application at https://www.tap.HESC.ny.gov/totw. Before reapplying, please read the following tips to ensure your new application submission will be successfully processed:
- Please use your own HESC account when applying. Accounts registered using other people's identifying information, such as a parent, cannot be used to submit a student's TAP application.
- Do not create multiple HESC accounts when applying. If you are experiencing difficulty accessing your HESC PIN account, please request assistance at https://www.hesc.ny.gov/get-help/unlock-your-account
- The identity used to create your HESC account must match your identity on FAFSA. If the personally identifying information you are using on your HESC account, such as date of birth, does not match your information on FAFSA, we will be unable to process your TAP application.
- Be sure your FAFSA application is fully processed with a SAI calculated. You can check your FAFSA status at any time by going to https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
If you have questions regarding this notice, please visit http://reservation.hesc.ny.gov/scholarships to schedule an appointment to speak with a HESC representative.
TAP 2024 - Scholarship Only Message
During the 2024-25 TAP application cycle, a high number of students mistakenly selected the “scholarship only” option on their TAP application. This choice leads them to a shortened version of the application which does not calculate a TAP award. However, some of these students, actually need a TAP award or are a recipient of a scholarship, like Excelsior or STEM, which requires them to complete the full TAP application.
Students who need to complete the full TAP application can update their account by following these steps:
- Go to NYS Student Aid Payment Application
- Click “Start my application” and log into the NYS Student Aid Payment Application
- Once logged into the application site, the student will note that a scholarship application has been completed. The student must select the box to complete the TAP Application.
- The student will be prompted to complete each section of the TAP Application.
- The student must provide parent(s) and spouse’s signatures if needed.
- Student signs and submits the TAP application.
Thank you for your support of these updates. Keeping you informed with regular updates is crucial to ensuring that we all stay aligned and can efficiently manage the programs that benefit our students. We look forward to our continued partnership.
Sincerely,
New York State Higher Education Services Corporation
